Exploring the essence of humanity in an age dominated by artificial intelligence, artist and poet Sasha Stiles collaborates with her AI alter ego, Technelegy, since 2018 to redefine literary and artistic expression. Their inventive partnership delves into how human cognition and machine learning intersect in processing language, opening the door to novel forms of storytelling and poetic creation suited for today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
At the heart of this ongoing experiment stands A LIVING POEM, a mesmerizing installation that transcends the traditional boundaries of poetry. This infinite text evolves continuously, powered by an intricate blend of human creativity and sophisticated algorithms. Drawing inspiration from the Museum of Modern Art’s treasured collection of text-based art, the poem reinvents itself every hour, dynamically generating fresh verses through a custom-built language model fueled by bespoke datasets and advanced AI technologies including GPT-4.
Visitors encounter an immersive sensory experience where words manifest in an array of fonts, most notably the innovative Cursive Binary typeface. This unique font marries the artist’s personal handwriting style with the duality of binary code, metaphorically capturing our evolving coexistence with technology. Beyond the visual spectacle, A LIVING POEM is enriched by an intimate soundscape crafted by Kris Bone, Stiles’s studio partner, evoking poetry’s oral origins and deepening the viewer’s engagement through auditory immersion accessible via QR code.
Described by Stiles as a ‘poem in residence,’ the work transforms the Museum’s lobby screen into a living, autonomous notebook, continuously performing and morphing in real time.
